Welcome to the employment section of our website.

We employ a number of people from many countries during the summer.

Picking Blueberries is a great way to meet people and earn money at the same time. You can, however, expect to work hard aswell.

Q. What exactly will I be doing?
A. You will be employed by our small company to assist with the harvesting of our blueberry crop. This involves hand picking the fruit (there are no thorns!).
We also employ people in our packhouse. Workers here are responsible for checking our fruit and putting it into smaller packs for supermarkets.

In general, the work is rewarding and challenging.

Q. When is work available?
A. Our season starts in early July and normally ends in late September.

Q. What are the hours?
A. Working hours vary considerably, but during peak season you can expect to work 12 hours per day 6 days per week. At other times there is less work and a 6 or 8 hour day, 5 days per week is normal.
Start and end times vary with the hours worked, but a 6 hour day will be from 08:30 to 16:00. A 12 hour day would usually be 07:00 to 20:00, allowing 1 hour break.

The upside to this is the money!

If the weather is wet, there is normally no work, unless you are employed in our packhouse where work never stops.

Q. How much can I earn?
A. For pickers, we pay for each Kg picked. This year in the main part of the season, we will pay £1.10 per Kg. How much money you make depends on how hard you work.
Earnings for peak period can reach £350 per week for a really good worker.
At the start and end of each season wages vary, but £150 is perfectly attainable.
In the packhouse, we operate a weekly wage of £250 per week with a bonus for productivity.

Q. What about tax?
A. There are 2 options, dependent on your circumstances.

Firstly, you can opt to be placed on our accounts and you will be charged tax and NI accordingly. If you are a EU student, then tax is not payable as long as a P38S from the Inland Revenue is completed (ask for details).
All packhouse workers must be employed in this way.
Or
You can work for us as a daily harvest casual. This means that you are employed 1 day at a time. You can take your money at the end of the day, but you have no guarantee of a job tomorrow. The benefit of this is that no tax or NI is chargeable at all. In general, we have rarely found any reason to not employ these staff for more than 1 day.

Q. Where do I sleep?
A. 4 person caravans are available on the farm. They are comfortable and have shower, toilet, cooker and 2 bedrooms.

We charge £5.00 per person for each night and a £50.00 deposit must be paid when you arrive. This is given back to you when you leave if the caravan has not been damaged.

Our accommodation fee includes gas and electricity

Q. How old do I have to be?

A. You must be over 16. Preferably you will also be over 18.
